The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute (OSMI) is one of the first freestanding centers of sleep medicine created in the United States. Established in 1989, its mission has been dedicated to delivering the best quality in sleep medicine care. Founded by the late Helmut S. Schmidt, M.D., the institute emphasizes the importance of diagnosing, treating, and managing patients in the most thorough manner.
Dr. Helmut Schmidt's vision and dedication to the field of sleep medicine helped transform what used to be an unknown specialty into a well established medical field with its own certification standards and a strong voice on a national level. He was the first President of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and founding organizer of the first annual Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) meeting in Columbus, OH (1986). He later helped to establish sleep medicine as a recognized specialty.
Fueled by his father’s passion for the field of sleep medicine, Dr. Markus H. Schmidt joined the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute in 2001 and has since become a leading sleep medicine specialist in Central Ohio. He has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors® from 2007 to 2013 in the field of sleep medicine for Central Ohio and was featured as such in Columbus Monthly 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012.
Over the years, The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute has grown in size, serving the Central Ohio community with two locations (Dublin and New Albany) and a comprehensive staff. The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute’s founding Dublin clinic has been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (previously the American Sleep Disorders Association) for over 20 years and has developed its own trademark program as a Center of Sleep Medicine Excellence™. In addition to advocating the best patient care through comprehensive evaluation and treatment of all sleep disorders, the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute is also devoted to continuing medical education (CME). In a partnership with the Sleep Medicine Research Foundation, it provides Central Ohio’s medical community with yearly conferences and workshops, all designed to expand health care professionals’ knowledge with the latest on research and techniques in the field of sleep medicine. The Institute is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education credits to physicians and other medical staff.
The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute is devoted to bringing sleep medicine to the Central Ohio community and beyond. Together with the Sleep Medicine Research Foundation and Sleep Medicine International, it provides training opportunities for health care professionals and the means to bring compassionate sleep medicine care to remote or rural areas.
