Our History

One of the first...

We are one of the first freestanding centers of sleep medicine ever created in the United States. We offer in-lab sleep studies and at home sleep studies shipped directly to the patient’s home. We work in close collaboration with Durable Medical Equipment companies, dentists, ENT physicians, behavioral specialists and a multitude of other providers to offer our patients an array of services. We are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and regularly engage in cutting edge research trials or partnerships.

Asim Roy, M.D.

MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Our institute has grown over the years under the stewardship of our medical director, Dr. Asim Roy, and now includes seven providers, all dedicated to sleep medicine.  Beloved by his patients, colleagues and staff, Dr. Roy brings his strong enthusiasm and talent to further new treatment options for patients. As a leading advocate of education, he is a driving force in Central Ohio behind some of the newest treatments available, such as Inspire therapy, ExciteOSA and various other pharmacological treatments.

Established by the late Helmut Schmidt, M.D., the institute emphasizes the importance of diagnosing, treating, and managing patients in a comprehensive manner. Dr. Helmut Schmidt helped transform sleep medicine from  an unknown specialty into a well-established medical field. He was the first President of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a founding organizer of the first annual  APSS meeting in Columbus, OH (1986). Now known as the SLEEP meeting, this clinical and scientific conference welcomes over 20,000 attendees .

Fueled by his father’s passion for the field of sleep medicine, Dr. Markus Schmidt joined the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute where he practiced for many years. He has since focused his interest on basic science and experimental research at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
