A home sleep study (HST) is an unattended procedure performed in the comfort of your home to either diagnose sleep apnea or verify Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) treatment efficacy. Screening is based on a medical history and an assessment questionnaire. The HST unit is mailed to you and typically involves two nights recordings. The equipment includes various sensors that are easy to apply. They monitor your heart rate, pulse, respiratory effort, arterial oxygen saturation, airflow and body position. Our provider will review the data.  If the oxygen level drops below a certain threshold and rises upon arousals, you most likely have sleep apnea.

An HST may also be used to confirm if your PAP treatment is adequate, in which case a pressure transducer will be used to detect PAP airflow as well as snoring frequency and volume.  Results from the home sleep study will be scored by a technician and interpreted by our physician. Please note that home sleep testing does not screen for other potential sleep disorders and is not as accurate or complete as an in-laboratory evaluation.  In some cases, our provider may recommend an in-lab sleep study.
